    Living the Cambodia Nightmare

    Featuring Jay Mather

    Dates: October 3 – December 16, 2019
    Events: Opening Reception October 3, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

In November of 1979, while working for the Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY, Jay Mather and fellow journalist Joel Brinkley
traveled to the Thailand-Cambodia border to document the massive exodus of Cambodian refugees fleeing the wrath
of the Khmer Rouge regime. While there they documented the work of
Dr. Kenneth Rasmussen, a Louisville, Kentucky
emergency pediatric physician, and a United Nations High Commission for Refugees doctor. He treated hundreds of Cambodians,
many of them children, in a small clinic established in the border town of Aranyaprathet, Thailand. Mather and Brinkley’s stories
and photographs that appeared in the Courier-Journal were awarded the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting.
    On the 40
th anniversary of these events, the University of Louisville Photographic Archives is proud to present
    Jay Mather’s Cambodia photographs.
