In 1901, at the age of eighteen, Cunningham bought her first camera, a 4×5 inch view camera, via mail order from the American School of Art in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1907, Cunningham graduated from University of Washington with a degree in chemistry. Her thesis was titled “Modern Processes of Photography.” She went on to spend a lifetime focusing her camera on the human subject, their experiences and inherent insight. This exhibition, curated by Carol Henry, explores Imogen Cunningham’s work from the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970s, a tumultuous time. Similar to today, women’s rights and civil rights were strongly in focus for our society and psyche. Where a photographer’s perspective makes timeless visuals, Imogen Cunningham reveals to us a participant’s perspective —a place where witness and relevance merge and we can see ourselves—now 50 years later with the same heartbeat.
“I have a formula for how to make a good photographer: I think that in order to make a good photograph, you have to be enthusiastic. That is, you have to think about it, like a poet would. And there are many choices, at that.” –Imogen Cunningham
