This show contains two strains of my work: Par Avion is aerial photographs of Kentucky and Indiana. Documentary Fictions takes elements of real situations I have photographed and combines them into anew reality that is totally in keeping with the original.

    Juanita Phoenix.

I saw that name painted in broad silver brush strokes on a brand-new padlocked mailbox mounted on a tenement wall. I wanted to remember this moment. I became entranced with the idea of packing apiece of reality into a two-dimensional rectangle. I bought a camera.

In 1975 I founded the Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project, photographing each of Kentucky’s120 counties with Bob Hower and Bill Burke. After that, I was a principal photographer for the President’s Commission on Coal. Documentary photography is in my blood. How do you make a meaningful visual statement that transports the viewer into the reality being depicted?

I am currently co-directing the current Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project. As part of the Project I have flown thousands of miles with my head and camera poked out the window of a small plane documenting what unfolds below. How things look from above, a reality that most never see. I am also well-grounded, continuing to photograph from terra firma.
