Formenlehre by Rhett L. Beck
Dates: September 25 – December 1, 2017
Events: Artist Reception: September 29 at 5:00-7:00 pm
The title and theme of this exhibition appropriate the term Formenlere or “theory of form” from the Bauhaus school of art and design, particularly the work of Johannes Itten whose famous Basic Course at the Bauhaus encouraged the highly individual and creative uses of light and dark, material and texture, rhythm, and expressive and subjective form. Beck applies these principles in a series of small-format black and white photographs, using both film and digital cameras, and including candid street scenes, portraits, and landscapes both rural and urban. Each freezes an instant of everyday drama, allowing the viewer to construct the broader narrative.
Though inadvertently born elsewhere, Beck has lived in Kentucky for many years and has deep family roots in Appalachia. Much of his work has featured the effects of nature on the built environment, most notably a series of photographs documenting the abandoned distilleries in Millville, Kentucky a selection of which were featured in Burying Monkeys: A Photographic Journey through the Old Crow & Old Taylor Distilleries (Broadstone Books, 2012). His work has been exhibited and is in collections in Kentucky and California.
The Jane Chancellor Moore Gallery is an alternative art space located off the lobby of the Kentucky Employee Credit Union in Frankfort. Founded in 2004 with the mission of taking art into the community and connecting artists with those who might not otherwise see their work. It is named for its original curator and is managed by Broadstone Media LLC.
