Aukram Burton is an educator, media artist, and producer currently serving as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. His work focuses on illuminating the shared cultural roots of Africa and the African Diaspora through media, exhibitions, and performances. Trained at the New England School of Photography, the University of Massachusetts, and MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Aukram has dedicated over four decades to documenting African-descended communities around the globe. His work affirms cultural identity and continuity through music, dance, iconography, and spiritual traditions.
Journeys in the African Diaspora: A Photographic Retrospective 1979-2024 is an exhibit showcasing a collection of photographs by photographer Aukram Burton. With over four decades of experience, Aukram has documented the lives, traditions, and movements of people across the African Diaspora—including in Barbados, Brazil, Benin, China, Cuba,Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria, Panama, Senegal, South Africa, Tibet, and throughout the United States. His work highlights a historical continuum shaped by voluntary and forced migrations, affirming shared cultural expressions rooted in music, dance, regalia, cuisine,iconography, and spirituality.
