For over 40 years, renowned photographer Richard Bram has been prowling the streets of the world looking for special moments in everyday life. Since becoming a photographer in Louisville, Kentucky in 1984, he has worked on major public events and intimate private moments, always with an eye for a significant gesture to animate the photograph. He is a founding member of UP Photographers, the first international street photography collective. Bram regularly writes, lectures, and leads workshops on street photography. In 2020 a major retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Mannheim, Germany. Now based in London, he continues to seek new images wherever he goes.
“I have come to love the ancient city of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico. I first went there in late 1996 and have been coming back regularly ever since. I’ve made thousands of photographs, had exhibitions, made good friends, and met incredible artists and photographers. My affection for Oaxaca runs through all these photographs. I am looking for the same things wherever I am in the world, whether in black and white or color. A graffito scratched into a wall caught my eye; a child with a shy gesture just before a performance; a boy on the top of a pick-up truck with palm leaves behind him like a rooster’s tail; a little girl is sucking on a drink as the street life goes on all around; a boy is apparently about to murder his father on the Zócalo. When I switched to color in my personal work in 2010, I took the same approach, though color is more difficult to do well. These photographs are a small sample of the many images I’ve made over the years.” – – – Richard Bram, London, 13 May 2024
