A profound spirit of invention distinguishes Nina Katchadourian’s work in photography, installation, video, and sound. Katchadourian finds endless possibilities for making art in whatever environment surrounds her, photographing the results. In the natural world, she has repaired spider webs and enlisted furry caterpillars to stand in for a moustache. She often appears in her photographs, nimbly creating character and props from her surroundings. In Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style, she ducks into airplane restrooms and improvises snowy headdresses and collars from toilet seat covers, neatly evoking seventeenth-century painting. Her work has been internationally recognized in exhibitions from New York to San Diego and Tokyo to Istanbul; in April, she was a featured artist at the Venice Biennale. Currently, she is part of Artist Experiments at the Museum of Modern Art, producing projects to engage visitors.
