Under the Skylight: Louisville’s 19th Century Portrait Studios

A glimpse into portrait photography of the nineteenth century, this exhibit features card photographs by a handful of Louisville photography studios that operated during the 1860s through 1890s. At a time before the practical application of light bulbs, photographers employed the use of skylights to illuminate their subjects and thus their businesses were often referred to as “skylight studios.” The variations in portrait styles and studio props, as well as the ornate card mounts and highly stylized studio logos that adorn the cartes de visite and cabinet cards photographs on exhibit reveal trends in Victorian era photography, graphic design, and advertising.

Opening reception on Thursday, October 10th from 5:00-7:00pm.
